Why NRA Ignores 90% of Americans Who Support Gun Control

Gun control versus gun rights is a heated debate that appears to be reserved for politics and Tea Party patriots who believe whatever right-wing media and Republican presidential hopefuls say to them.

Senator Ted Cruz promised that he would undo the president’s executive action on gun control by promising to do the impossible.

Cruz said: “[Obama] can abuse his power all he wants. He has a phone and he has a pen. But if you live by the pen, you die by the pen. And my pen has got an eraser.”

Beyond the ridiculousness of a presidential candidate failing to understanding that erasers do not work on ink, the pandering Cruz is capable of transcends reality and speaks to his evangelical, conspiracy theorist minority.

Senator Marco Rubio said that President Obama’s executive orders are an “inconvenience [to] law-abiding people because they’re the only ones who are going to follow the law.”

Rubio asserted that the “big problem with this executive order is that it now puts individual Americans at risk of going to jail. If you get the background check wrong because you sold a neighbor a gun, you could face jail time.”

The senator ignores the fact that it is gun stores selling strawman purchases and “default proceed” sales that make purchasing a gun easier for criminals and more reliable than buying guns off the street.

In fact, in 2014 Public Policy Polling (PPP) showed in a survey of gun owners that they “overwhelmingly support background checks, and that includes gun owners who are Republicans and gun owners who are NRA members.”

A surprising 90% of Americans , including gun owners, support background checks on all gun sales (without exception); however that is not all:

  • 83% of gun owners across the country support criminal background checks on the sale of any and all guns
  • 72% of NRA members support checking the background of all potential gun purchasers
  • 67% of Americans (51% of them being Republicans), including gun owners, are in favor of the president’s executive actions on gun control

Susanne.Posel-Headline.News.Official- gun.control.obama.nra.executive.action.cnn.poll_occupycorporatismSenator Pay Toomey explained one reason for this divide between republican rhetoric and the president’s decision to reduce the amount of Americans killed by gun-violence is that republicans do not “want to be seen helping [Obama] do something … just because the president wanted to do it.”

And this is because at the head of this anti-Obama campaign is the NRA who claim to be on a crusade to stop any form of gun legislation because it hurts the profits of the firearms manufacturers that pay Wayne LaPierre to keep their pathway clear on Capitol Hill.

The NRA asserted that the president was “defying the will of the people” by installing executive orders on gun control; however the majority gun owners of the US are supportive of these measures and do not agree with the NRA’s position.

AJ Somerset, gun owners and author of the book “Arms: The Culture and Credo of the Gun”, has been referred to by the NRA as hating the 2nd Amendment simply for pointing out that this organization does not represent the majority of gun owners and their feelings on gun control measures.

Michael Wiesser, a gun dealer from Wisconsin, has pointed out “that nearly 50% of gun owners don’t buy this nonsense should give pause to those who still regard the NRA as a behemoth when it comes to influencing public opinion about guns. To me, it’s more like a case of the emperor without clothes.”
