Worst of Syrian war is behind us: Assad

nsnbc : Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said the worst of the now six-year-long war in Syria “is behind us”. The statement was made in an interview with the India-based WION television and against the backdrop of a string of recent advances by the Syrian Arab Army, Russian, and other allied forces.

Bashar Al-Assad_WION TV_Damascus_Syria_Jun 2017Last week the Syrian Arab Army and allied forces made significant advances against Islamic State and other insurgents east of Aleppo and in part in Deir Ez-Zor, resulting in over 1,200 casualties among the insurgents within days.

Another relatively recent and significant victory was the liberation of the city of Aleppo in December 2016 after years of heavy and bitter fighting, recent progress in Ghouta, Palmyra and other cities and regions.

Although he did not mention it, even the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with their main fighting force consisting of the Syrian – Kurdish YPG / YPJ, and their operations in Tabqa, plus their push toward Raqqa have – at least for the time being – taken some pressure off of the Syrian Arab Army and its allied forces. Assad, earlier this year, underpinned that Syria would cooperate with all who would help Syria fight ISIS, including the USA – provided the US doesn’t have ambitions to occupy the country.

In the interview with WION television, President Al-Assad noted that “Things now are moving in the right direction, which is a better direction, because we are defeating the terrorists. … Unless the West and other countries and their allies, their puppets, support those extremists in … a very massive way, I’m sure the worst is behind us.” The full text of the interview was published by the Syrian state news agency SANA – (HERE).

More than 320,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 when the so-called “Arab Spring” swept across the region and also resulted in in demonstrations in Syria, for the release of a group of boys who had been arrested because of their protests.

Al-Assad also reiterated that allegations about the use of chemical weapons in the town of Khan Sheikhun by the Syrian military were fabricated and he reiterated that there is a need to conduct full and objective investigations rather than unfounded allegations.

The embattled President also said that the peace initiative agreed by Russia, Iran and “rebel-supporter” Turkey, in the Kazakh capital Astana last month was a promising idea. “Until this moment we haven’t had any real political initiative that could produce something, although Astana has achieved let’s say partial results through the recent de-escalation areas in Syria, which was positive,” he said. The agreement seeks to set up four areas in Syria where fighting will stop – the implementation, however, in a theater as complex and convoluted as Syria, is extremely difficult and may take some time.
