Zero The Hero Gets 5Yrs Probation for Placing Fake Bomb on Board KLM Airliner

nsnbc : U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mosman sentenced Sean Davies to five years on probation and the payment of restitution to KLM. Davies had placed a fake bomb on board a KLM airliner on an international flight and reported the discovery of the bomb to look like a hero.

KLM_PlaneDavis boarded KLM Flight 569 from Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in October 2014. The KLM airliner was 3 1/2 hours into the flight when Davies told a cabin crew member that there was “a strange wire coming out of a cabinet in the restroom, leading to an electrical socket”.

The suspicious device was inspected by the airliner’s captain. It turned out to be a miniature wine bottle with cables and other items attached to it. KLM decided to divert the flight and to land the airliner in Cairo, Egypt.

The 23-year-old Sean Davies, who earned himself the nick-name “Zero the Hero” from the coastal region of Oregon, U.S.A. has no prior convictions.

He has been described as emotionally unstable and as having alcohol problems. He has a steady job at a sales clerk at a jewelry store in a Portland suburb. During sentencing, Judge Michael Moseman addressed the self-proclaimed want-to-be hero, saying:

“I do want you to understand that this arrest and this conviction really are an arrow in life pointing you to a terrible place. … And only by your own actions can you get off that path.”

Panic among the 271 passengers on board was avoided only due to the captain’s and crew’s professional handling of the situation. Egyptian authorities interviewed Davis because he was under suspicion of having placed the device. Tha fake “bomb” was constructed with the help of a miniature wine bottle, an e-cigarette battery, soap, an I-phone charger and wires from the KLM provided headphones on board the airliner.

Asked about where the charger for his iPhone was, Davies told Egyptian police that it had burst into flames while he was in Africa. He was returned to the United States in December 2014 after a stop-over in Amsterdam where he was interviewed by Dutch police. Davies tried to explain that he had made frequent trips to the restroom because he suffered from kidney stones.

After arriving in the United States Davies was interrogated by Portland police and the FBI. Davies confessed to having build the fake bomb and explained that he intended to look like a hero for discovering the device. He noted that he felt emotionally down at the time that he pulled the prank. In February 2016 he pleaded guilty to conveying false information concerning a device which could destroy or damage an aircraft.

Davies apologized to the airline, the air crew, the passengers, the U.S. government and his family. Davies maintained that he made a big mistake, but one that he needed to make to learn that he was on a dangerous path. Davies was released after the sentencing and has five years probation. The sentence may be lenient, but then again; Earning an estimated $85,330 that he has to pay to KLM is probably  hard enough even with the wages of a sales clerk. Earning $85,330 to restitute KLM while working in a corporate U.S. prison is probably impossible so Judge Moseman may have reasoned that everyone would be better off by letting Davies off the hook.
