7 Essential Oils You Should Take To Help You Sleep — And 3 To Avoid

Next Story

To many, essential oils are simply a way to make yourself or your home smell good. However, essential oils are so much more powerful than that, and in many cases they can treat or cure numerous ailments.

Essential oils aren’t something to joke around with, either. If you’re pregnant, take pharmaceuticals, or have a serious medical condition, check with your doctor to ensure that you can safely take essential oils, as many have contraindications. For example, if used improperly, rosemary essential oil can cause a miscarriage, and many essential oils can affect your heart rate.

That being said, they can also be used as wonderful tools to improve your health. Here are the top seven essential oils you can use to improve your sleep:

Chamomile

Chamomile is an excellent natural relaxant, antiseptic, antibiotic, antidepressant, digestive, and sedative. Most people prefer to either diffuse it in a diffuser/nebulizer or dilute it with a carrier oil and apply it to the backs of their ears or insides of their wrists. It also smells wonderful, and could put you to sleep in no time!

Rose

Although rose essential oil is fairly expensive, it’s another oil that can help you get your beauty rest. In addition to being a sleep remedy, rose is also used as a perfume, an aphrodisiac, an antiseptic/antiviral, an anti-aging product, and a laxative.

Frankincense

Frankincense boasts many healing properties has actually been proven to kill ovarian cancer cells (read more about that in our CE article here). An ancient resin, Frankincense can be used as a disinfectant, sedative, and digestive, and can help build up the immune system and improve oral health.

Lavender

An incredibly beautiful smelling flower, lavender essential oil can be used to treat pain, inflammation, and anxiety, as a sedative, as a delicious addition to foods, and to reduce blood pressure.

Catnip

Although catnip can be used to calm restless sleep, I’ve used it numerous times as a bug repellant! It can also help soothe menstrual cramps, mitigate anxiety and stress, treat wounds, and aid stomach pain and cold and flu symptoms.

Kava Root

Kava root can be used to improve sleep cycles, reduce anxiety, and as an anti-aging product. It can also ease symptoms of menopause and help people quit smoking.

Cedarwood

It’s said that cedarwood helps to cleanse energies and rid any negative energies overnight, hence its potential as a sleep aid. Cedarwood has a woodsy smell and can be used as a sedative, an insecticide, and a diuretic, and it’s antiseptic.

So, which essential oils should you avoid before bed?

Citrus

Although orange essential oil can help you sleep, other citrus essential oils tend to have the exact opposite effect. Essential oils of lemon and grapefruit both encourage mental alertness and could have you up thinking at all hours of the night as opposed to sleeping. Instead, try using these essential oils early in the morning to help you get up and start your day with lots of energy!

Peppermint

Although peppermint is incredible for treating headaches and pain, it should be avoided prior to bed. Since peppermint provides a refreshing tingly feeling, it can also really wake people up. If you’re tired in the mornings, however, try smelling some peppermint to give you an extra boost of energy!

Rosemary

Although rosemary can be great in aiding your immune system, it should be avoided prior to going to bed, as it has a stimulant effect. For this very reason, it can improve memory and cognition, so you could try smelling some rosemary while you’re working hard during the day!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re an avid essential oil user or you’ve never used them before, I’d highly recommend exploring this realm of natural healing! Essential oils offer an effective, all-natural alternative to many treatments, including sleep problems.
