Colombian FARC and ELN negotiators meet in Cuba to discuss peace


nsnbc : Negotiators of the demobilizing FARC-EP and the ELN, currently engaged in peace talks with the Colombian government, meet in the Cuban capital Havana discuss and coordinate the peace process and exchange views and experience.

Coordination of the peace process between the FARC-EP and the National Liberation Army (ELN) is part of the preliminary agreement between the Colombian government and the ELN that was signed in the Venezuelan capital Caracas in March 30, 2016.

Sergio Jaramillo, Colombia’s High Commissioner of Peace announced in a press release that the meeting takes place with the authorization of the national government with the intention to allow an exchange of experiences between the negotiation tables of the FARC and ELN.

The meeting is also aimed at discussing the development and implementation of the peace accord between the government and the FARC-EP.

The agreement from March 30, 2017 stipulates that once the talks between the government and the ELN have reached this public phase, there will be implemented mechanisms to coordinate and synchronize the talks between the government and the ELN with those between the government and the FARC-EP in the Cuban capital Havana.

The Red Cros is in charge of transporting FARC leaders from the demobilization, disarmament and reintegration camps in Colombia to Cuba as well as with the transportation of ELN leaders from the Ecuadorian capital Quito to Cuba.

The Cuban capital Havana was also hosting the official peace talks between the FARC and the Colombian government from 2012 until 2016 – plus some of the explorative and unofficial talks from 2011 to 2012.

The meeting will be held with participation of representatives from Norway, Ecuador, Brazil, Cuba, Venezuela and Chile, the guarantor countries for the peace talks between the Colombian government and the ELN.

Also this point is in accordance with the agreement from March 30, 2016.

The exact date for the FARC-ELN meeting has not yet been publicly disclosed is likely to be held within a week.

The Colombian government announced that it has postponed the next round of talks with the ELN from May 3 to May 10.

The preliminary agreement from March 30, 2016 stipulated that official peace talks should start in May that year.

However, the official talks were delayed on several occasions and started only on February 7, 2017.

The ELN is the last-standing leftist guerrilla in Colombia. Both the FARC-EP and the ELN started their armed struggle against the state in 1964.
