Diver stung by stingray at Melbourne Aquarium

A MELBOURNE Aquarium diver has been stung by a stingray at feeding time.

The male diver suffered a minor injury during the 11am (AEST) dive feed in the Oceanarium today, Melbourne Aquarium general manager Mark Manteit said.

“The diver was stung after accidentally kneeling on a smooth stingray, which resulted in an injury to the tip of the diver’s knee,” Mr Manteit said.

“The ambulance was called, as per our standard operating procedures. The staff member has now been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.”

The diver was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said.

In May, a two-metre ray stung a diver in the hand during feeding time at the same aquarium.

The audience watched as the 37-year-old woman’s right hand was struck by the barb during a routine feed.
