Prominent Greek-American Michael Psaros announced on Tuesday the establishment of the “Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Endowed Orthodox Chaplaincy” at Georgetown University.
The announcement was made at a dinner at Georgetown University held in honor of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew who is on an official visit to the US.
Michael Psaros, who serves on the Board of Directors of Georgetown University, offered $3 million of funding for the creation of the Chair. This is the second Chair Psaros has established. In 2013 he created “The Michael and Robin Psaros Endowed Chair in Business Administration.”

“Today, on this historic visit by His-All-Holiness to Georgetown University, my family is honored and humbled to announce the creation of ‘The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Endowed Orthodox Chaplaincy, Endowed by the Michael Psaros Family.’ The Orthodox Ministry at Georgetown will now last forever,” Psaros said and added:
“This Endowment is the opportunity for my family to give back to the Church and the University, a blessing of blessings. It is fitting, that Georgetown University, is now in possession of a true Patriarchal Seat, in the name of Bartholomew.”
On Monday, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visited Georgetown University where he attended an interfaith ceremony with Cardinal Wilton Gregory, archbishop of Washington, DC, Georgetown President John J. DeGioia, Thomas A. Reynolds III, chair of Georgetown’s Board of Directors, and Georgetown University students.
The ceremony took place in Georgetown’s newly renovated Copley Crypt Chapel, where Catholic Masses and Orthodox Christian liturgical services are celebrated year-round. Standing before a newly installed Orthodox icon screen, the Ecumenical Patriarch praised his “real brotherly friendship with Pope Francis” and accepted a ceremonial gift symbolizing religious unity from Georgetown President John J. DeGioia.
“We have a special connection to this marvelous institution,” the Ecumenical Patriarch said during a later dinner at Georgetown. “We would like to add a heartfelt expression of our appreciation for Georgetown and its ongoing role in the intellectual and spiritual formation of so many.”

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew met President Biden at the White House on Monday in a meeting described as “warm and cordial.”
The focus of their discussion was climate change. The Ecumenical Patriarch noted that the need for political leaders to respond is particularly timely in light of the imminent COP26 meeting in Glasgow.
Bartholomew also thanked President Biden for his decisive response to the pandemic and for his readiness to support developing nations in securing Covid-19 vaccines for their populations.
Bartholomew also has met on Monday with Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Blinken said that they discussed the US commitment to supporting global religious freedom.
“We value our partnership with the Orthodox Christian community worldwide and religious minorities in Turkey and the region.”
