Iran’s approach to global energy security not politicized: Navy commander

According to Press TV, Commander of Iran’s Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari was quoted by Iranian media as saying on Wednesday that being located at the focal point of the world’s energy ellipse is a great opportunity for Iran to energize its “sea-based” progress and development.

“Countries like China, India, Japan and European [states] supply their needed fuel” through marine routes, the Iranian commander said, adding, “Therefore, every measure must be taken to make the most of the advantage of being located at the focal point of the world’s energy supply route.”

According to Iranian Ministry of Petroleum’s SHANA news agency, the world’s strategic energy ellipse is a geopolitical region encompassing Iran and the entire Persian Gulf region in its middle; Arab sheikdoms on the south; parts of Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia on the west and northwest; the Caspian Sea, southern parts of Russia, and parts of Kazakhstan, on the north; and parts of Uzbekistan on the east. The big diameter of this ellipse is the axis that connects the Caspian Sea to Persian Gulf and is of high strategic importance.

Further in his remarks, Rear Admiral Sayyari noted that the world’s strategic energy ellipse contains as much as 71 percent of the world’s recognized oil reserves and up to 65 percent of global natural gas reserves with Iran being one of its focal points.

He added that capabilities of the Islamic Republic’s Navy are so high “that it can easily guarantee security of the entire region and security of global energy supply.”
