Mining bosses live in ‘parallel universe’

Labor senator Doug Cameron has accused the mining industry of living in a “parallel universe”.

The senator was a guest at a Minerals Council of Australia dinner in Canberra on Wednesday night.

He commended Prime Minister Julia Gillard for her “terrific” speech, in which she told mining bosses that they didn’t own the nation’s resources.

But Senator Cameron wasn’t so impressed by speeches delivered by mining sector representatives.

“I think the speeches from some of the Minerals Council people were a bit as if they were in a parallel universe,” he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.

“It’s as if the mining industry is down on its knees and (that) we shouldn’t share the benefits of the mining industry.”

He said the industry should “get real”.

“This is an industry that’s getting all the benefits of a stable economy.

“It’s by far time that the rest of the community shares in the boom.”
