Pyne defends running from parliament

Manager of coalition business Christopher Pyne has defended his decision to bolt for the door of parliament to negate Craig Thomson’s vote.

When division was called for a gag motion in the lower house on Wednesday, independent MP Craig Thomson sided with the coalition to vote against the motion.

Mr Pyne and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott dashed to exclude themselves from the floor, attempting to neutralise the advantage Mr Thomson’s vote would have given them.

“We think it’s a very important principle that Craig Thomson’s vote should not be counted,” Mr Pyne told the Seven Network’s Sunrise program.

“We will not accept Craig Thomson’s vote.”

Mr Pyne said any time Craig Thomson tried to vote with the coalition, the party would send someone out of the house.

“If he votes with us, I will sit, or somebody will sit in the advisers’ box, or leave the chamber, so his vote doesn’t count.”
