Mokbel has suspected heart attack

Tony Mokbel had a date in court on Monday but he’s likely to be spending it in hospital under heavy guard after suffering a suspected heart attack in Barwon Prison.

Paramedics were called to the prison around 11am (AEDT) on Sunday after the drugs kingpin complained of chest pains and shortness of breath.

When they arrived Mokbel was finding it hard to breathe and the paramedics gave him oxygen and an aspirin.

He was taken to Geelong Hospital and later transferred to St Vincents Hospital in a stable condition.

A spokesman for Corrections Victoria would not confirm the patient was Mokbel but said a 46-year-old prisoner was taken to hospital to receive treatment for a medical condition.

“Corrections Victoria does not discuss individual prisoners or their movements for security reasons,” the spokesman said.

The underworld figure was due to face court on Monday morning for final submissions in his change of plea application.

Mokbel is seeking to rescind his guilty plea to major drug trafficking charges after admissions by several police involved with his case that they did not swear affidavits.
