A GRIEVING mother is begging teens to quit playing railway roulette as she struggles to comprehend the death of her “baby girl”.

Tien Nguyen told the Herald Sun yesterday her family’s life had become a living hell when police told her that her daughter, Teresa Ho, 15, had been killed by a train at St Albans.

“It’s so painful. I don’t want my life. I want to die, too,” she said. “We had a big love for each other.

“She was my baby girl.”

More than 400 children from several local schools attended the tragic scene yesterday at Ginifer station and placed flowers during a memorial service. Tearful friends embraced each other, their faces etched in grief.

Ms Nguyen and Teresa’s father, Due Ho, attended the service and were overwhelmed with emotion.

Only hours earlier at her Cairnlea home, Ms Nguyen sat in her daughter’s bedroom cradling one of the soft toys that covered Teresa’s bed and a framed picture of her.

Mr Ho burst into tears when he walked into the bedroom and remembered his daughter’s big smile.

“I felt like I went to hell and I would’ve rather died. I wish I died and my daughter was still here,” he said through a translator.

Ms Nguyen pleaded with daredevil teens to save their families the heartache that had gripped her.

“Please be careful and pay attention. If the boom gates are down, just wait,” she said. “It’s too dangerous and it’s not worth it.

“I don’t want any more people to be hurt or die. I’m hurting so much and I don’t want anyone else to go through this.”

Ms Nguyen said while she struggled to comprehend what her daughter did on Monday, walking around the boom gates and into the path of a city-bound V/Line train, the State Government needed to alleviate any risks.

“I want the Government to do something and stop another family feeling like this,” she said.”We have lost so many lives there before. It’s not safe enough. Look what’s happened – I’ve lost my daughter.”

The local community has campaigned for 20 years to have an underpass at the railway crossing where Teresa died. Police at the scene yesterday helped control the crowd of mourners.

“It’s another lesson to us that we should be more careful about crossing the road, especially the railway crossing,” friend Phem Tan told the after-school gathering.
