Police say they will step up their presence on Northern Territory roads this Christmas for Operation Crossroads.

They say past statistics suggest about 70 people will die on Australian and New Zealand roads over the holidays and two of those will be in the Northern Territory.

Senior Sergeant Andrew Heath says many fatalities are preventable, and police will target the leading cause of crashes.

“What we’ve adopted here is a 12-day zero tolerance traffic campaign, against all road rules, but concentrating on speeding, wearing a seat belt, driver fatigue, drink driving, drug driving, and vehicle roadworthiness,” Sergeant Heath said.

St John Ambulance’s Craig Garraway says sadly, paramedics are busier than they ever have been.

“They want to spend Christmas with their families knowing that they haven’t had to go and deal with death and trauma on the road,” He said.

Operation Crossroads wraps up on January 3.
