1,200 more troops for London Olympics

The move comes only one week before the London Olympic Games begin and is the second emergency deployment of British army soldiers.

May has already authorized the call-up of 3,500 extra troops because the British private security company G4S announced it could not supply 10,400 forces for Olympics security.

The second emergency deployment of 1,200 military soldiers for Olympic security followed the disclosure that May was warned about problems at G4S several weeks before she had previously admitted. Last week, May told British MPs that ministers had only become aware of problems at G4S the previous day.

Moreover, British MPs have raised concerns over “chaos” during the Olympic Games and said security preparations for the London Olympics have undermined the public’s confidence in organizers.

“The chaos which has emerged over the security contract was predictable and undermines confidence in those responsible for managing the Games”, said Labour MP Margaret Hodge, the chairman of the Commons Public Accounts Committee.

The number of British soldiers deployed at the London Olympics has risen to 17,000, almost twice as many as the 9,500 British occupying forces in Afghanistan.
