150 feared dead as passenger plane crashes into building in Lagos

Lagos State police spokesman Joseph Jaiyeoba told AFP the plane went down in
the Iju neighbourhood on the mainland of the city where most of the city’s
population is concentrated.

Federal emergency management confirmed the crash in a neighbourhood just
outside the airport and said that its emergency personnel were on their way
to the scene.

A spokesman for Nigerian airline Dana confirmed one of its planes had crashed
but could not immediately provide further details.

“I can confirm that one of our planes crashed today on the outskirts of
Lagos,” Tony Usidamen told the AFP news agency

“We lost communication with the aircraft. We are going to issue an
official statement.”

Lagos, the largest city in Africa’s most populous nation, is home to an
estimated 15 million people.

Lagos’ international airport is a major hub for West Africa and saw 2.3
million passengers pass through it in 2009, according to the most recent
statistics provided by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

Nigeria has suffered a string of fatal air crashes in the last decade.
