2.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Baltimore Area

(Terri Hogan) The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed a 2.2-magnitude earthquake in eastern Frederick County early Saturday morning.

The quake occurred just before 6 a.m., and was located 13 miles northeast of Frederick, near Linganore.

Approximately 40 people reported to the “Did You Feel It” section on the USGS website, with the majority of the reports coming from Westminster, Mount Airy, and New Windsor.

Cpl. Brian Gaumer of the Maryland State Police, Frederick barracks, said that he was unaware of any incidents related to the earthquake.

Jessica Turner, a USGS geophysicist, said that a 2.2-magnitude earthquake is unlikely to cause any damage.

“These earthquakes can happen anywhere in the world, but since Maryland doesn’t get earthquakes very often, when they do occur, people tend to feel them,” she said. “It was felt widely because the energy travels further in earthquakes on the eastern side of the United States, which has to do with basic geology.”

Turner said there are not likely to be aftershocks, as those tend to occur with larger earthquakes.
