A 5.9-magnitude tremor rattled northern Italy early on Sunday, the US Geological Survey says. The earthquake struck some 36 km northwest of the city of Bologna. There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The epicenter of the quake, which was initially registered at 6.3, was located at a relatively shallow depth of 10.1 km.
It was shortly followed by a 5.1-magnitude aftershock.
In 2009, a major earthquake hit central Italian city of L’Aquila, killing almost 300 people.
