58 people die in Nigeria attacks

Nigerian Red Cross official Andronicus Adeyemo told the Associated Press on Sunday that 56 people were killed and more than 300 displaced on Saturday.

Gunmen also killed two Nigerian politicians in the Plateau State on Sunday. The two were on their way to attend a mass funeral for the victims of Saturday’s attacks.

“The senator representing Plateau North, Gyang Dantong, and the majority leader of the state assembly, Gyang Fulani, were gunned down today by Fulani herdsmen,” Pam Ayuba, spokesman for the state’s governor, said on Sunday.

Authorities have not yet commented on who they suspect as perpetrators.

Nigerian Senate President David Mark issued a statement asking Nigerian people to “rise against those who are determined to return us to a state of nature where life has little or no value.”

Plateau State is situated in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where the Muslim-dominated north and the Christian-majority south meet.

According to Human Rights Watch, at least 1,000 people were killed in inter-communal violence around Jos in 2010.
