Families will use extra benefits delivered in the budget to pay basic household costs, rather than spending in stores, a consumer group says.
Choice says families were saying the money would go into household bills, putting new brakes on the car and paying their car registration.
“We’ve been hearing from our consumers they’re going to be using this money to just to pay basic bills,” spokeswoman Ingrid Just said.
Choice also had heard those not eligible for the family tax cuts and increased benefits were wondering why they were subsidising families.
Mr Just said some will save where they can but she expected the extra pocket money for families would be spent on basic cost-of-living expenses.
