NAME: James Rupert Murdoch

FAMILY: The fourth of six children of media magnate Rupert Murdoch.

OCCUPATION: Deputy chief operating officer of News Corp.

AGE: 39. Born Dec. 13, 1972, in London.

CAREER: Interned at the Daily Mirror in Sydney, a newspaper his father owned, at age 15. Studied film and history at Harvard but dropped out to start a recording label in 1995. Joined News Corp. in 1996 as executive vice president responsible for some digital media ventures. Became chairman and CEO of News Corp.’s Asian television group, Star, in 2000. Served as CEO of British Sky Broadcasting, in which News Corp. holds a 39 percent stake, from 2003 to 2007. Named chairman and CEO of Europe and Asia for News Corp. and executive chairman of U.K. newspaper group, News International, in 2007. Named deputy chief operating officer of News Corp. in March 2011. Stepped down as News International executive chairman Wednesday amid ongoing investigation of phone hacking and bribery at the U.K. newspapers.

OWNERSHIP OF NEWS CORP.: Will be a beneficiary of the Murdoch Family Trust, which controls 38.4 percent of News Corp.’s Class B voting shares. He will have a vote in the trust along with elder siblings Prudence, Elisabeth and Lachlan.

PERSONAL LIFE: Married Kathryn Hufschmid in 2000. Has three children.
