Abbott plan will increase traffic: Greens

The Opposition’s plan to further develop major motorway projects will increase traffic congestion and pollution, a Greens senator says.

Reacting to Opposition leader Tony Abbott’s announcement that a coalition government would inject billions into road infrastructure programs in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon said the money would be much better spent on public transport.

“Motorways do not reduce traffic congestion,” she said in a statement on Saturday.

“The Coalition plan would increase traffic congestion, raise pollution levels and further stagnate public transport projects.

“World experience shows that motorways create induced traffic, as they encourage people to use their cars and to desert public transport.”

Senator Rhiannon said investing in public transport infrastructure was the only way to provide an effective transport system for Australia’s increasing population.

“Mr Abbott’s $3 billion motorway plan squanders an opportunity to carve out a public transport vision for our major cities,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“The $3 billion he has earmarked for motorways would be better spent on public transport.”
