“Two Afghan National Police were also killed and another one wounded
after they intervened.”
Hamid Karzai has attempted to close down security companies across the
country, including many in Kandahar, claiming they are undermining the
police and many are little more than the militias or armed retinues of
strongmen.
Meanwhile the Afghan intelligence service said it had arrested a suicide
bombing cell linked to a wave of assassinations of key government figures in
northern Afghanistan.
A spokesman said the three men were linked to the killing of Gen Daud Daud,
chief of police for northern Afghanistan; Mohammad Omar, governor of Kunduz;
and two MPs.
Lotfullah Mashal, spokesman for the National Directorate of Security (NDS),
said the three had given food, shelter and direction to a series of bombers
sent from Pakistan by the cell’s leader, Qari Abdul Rahim.
