Alabama, Mississippi primaries begin

Opinion polls indicate that Tuesday’s main contenders are Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and ex-Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich also campaigned for support is the two states along his two top rivals on Monday.

The first contender to reach the number of 1,144 delegates will be elected as the presidential nominee to run against US President Barack Obama.

Romney has won nearly 40 percent of the total delegates.

Mitt Romney has been announced as the big winner of last week’s primaries called Super Tuesday, when ten states took part in voting.

Over the next few months, primaries will be held in every US state to vote on the Republican Party competitors before a final nominee is elected to challenge President Barack Obama in the November elections.

In the US, a president is not elected directly by the people, but by the Electoral College. This means a candidate may be elected despite losing the popular vote.
