TIRANA, Albania (AP) — A senior Albanian security official has been placed under house arrest over the death of four opposition supporters who were shot during an anti-government demonstration a year ago.
Prosecutor General Ina Rama said Monday the arrest warrant for Ndrea Prendi, head of a state security service that protects Albanian government institutions and officials, was issued after reviewing the results of an inquiry assisted by the FBI.
Arrest warrants also were issued for two other government officials.
The protesters were killed in January 2011 during a mass anti-government rally organized by the opposition against alleged corruption and vote rigging by Albania’s conservative government.
