Annan urges respect for Syria ceasefire

Briefing the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the situation in Syria, he asserted that the situation in the Middle Eastern country is “bleak” and “unacceptable,” and urged both the Syrian government and the armed opposition to implement the peace plan comprehensively.

Annan claimed that government forces have entered Hama, where he said a number of people have been killed, without elaborating.

The envoy also asked the UNSC for the speedy deployment of 300 ceasefire monitors in Syria.

“We must ensure that the momentum generated by the council’s speedy decision is not lost,” Annan said.

The first group of UN observers arrived in Syria late on April 15. The observers have been approved for the mission according to UNSC Resolution 2042, passed on April 14.

On April 21, the UNSC members met and unanimously voted on Resolution 2043 to dispatch a mission of 300 observers to Syria.

Annan said the UN vote for deploying a team of observers to Syria is a “pivotal moment for the stabilization of the country.”

On Monday, three separate attacks targeted the country’s security forces despite the UN-backed truce, which was part of the six-point peace plan proposed by Annan in March.

At least three people were also wounded in a car bomb blast in central Damascus. The Syrian government blamed terrorist groups for the explosion.

The government insists that foreign-backed terrorist groups are bent on undermining the peace plan.
