Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop and Greens deputy leader Adam Bandt have taken time out from the federal election campaign to host a special edition of the ABC’s music video program, Rage.

The deputies each chose 20 favourite songs and shared stories about their relationship with music.

Mr Albanese, who chose songs by grunge band Nirvana, PJ Harvey and Nick Cave, says some of his favourite songs have strong political messages.

“A lot of it was political … Billy Bragg had a political message, Bruce Springsteen had a message about working class politics, so there was a political edge to it all,” he told the ABC’s Weekend Breakfast program.

“The Clash and a lot of the great bands in the the UK at that time arose out of anti-Thatcherism and of course bands like Midnight Oil with my mate [former education minister] Peter Garrett.”

Ms Bishop’s choices included The Easybeats’ Friday on My Mind and Madonna’s Like A Virgin, which she said she first heard while travelling around Europe in the mid-1980s.

“It was being played everywhere and we literally sang our way around Europe singing Like a Virgin,” she told Rage.

Mr Bandt included a track by British electronic music duo The Chemical Brothers, Star Guitar, in his choices.

“Michel Gondry directed it, he’s done a number of other films and clips,” Mr Bandt said.

“This is a really simple … almost mathematical and, I think, beautiful and perfectly executed.”

Rage’s election special airs tonight at 11:20pm on ABC1.
