Anti-NATO rallies continue in Chicago

On Thursday, protesters marched towards several consulates of the NATO-member states in Chicago, chanting “Say No to NATO” and “When drones fly, children die, stop the wars now!”

Demonstrators condemned the alliance’s involvement in the Afghan war and other military operations.

A dozen or so of the protesters also staged a so-called die-in, lying on the ground and pretending to be dead after being struck by a cardboard drone.

Thousands of protesters from across the United States have gathered in Chicago ahead of a planned NATO summit on May 20 and 21, when leaders of the 28 NATO members and 22 allied countries are expected to meet.

The city’s police have been preparing for the event for nearly a year and officers from police departments as far away as Philadelphia and Milwaukee are expected to help with some tasks during the summit meeting.

Chicago police have reportedly spent USD 1 million on riot-control equipment in the last few months to control the peaceful demonstrations.

More than a dozen anti-NATO protesters have been arrested during protests in Chicago over the past days.
