Apple founder Steve Jobs ‘took drugs and abandoned his family

It includes an account of a bomb threat and blackmail attempt which Jobs
received while at Apple in 1985, which he appears to have brushed off.

Summing up their findings, the FBI concluded: “Several individuals
commented concerning past drug use on the part of Mr Jobs.

“Several individuals questioned Mr Jobs’ honesty stating that Mr Jobs
will twist the truth and distort reality in order to achieve his goals.

“They also commented that, in the past, Mr Jobs was not supportive of
[redacted] (the mother of his child born out of wedlock) and their daughter;
however, recently has become more supportive. Mr Jobs also commented
concerning his past drug use.”

While a number of the friends, former colleagues, acquaintances and family
members of the computer giant portrayed him in negative terms, criticising
his manner and personal life, they universally described him as an
impressive individual and recommended him for the government post.

At the time, Jobs was at a relative low point in his career, having left Apple
following a row with his co-founders before quitting another firm, ACI, amid
acrimony. He had formed his own companies, NeXT and Pixar.

Several acquaintances told the FBI agents that Jobs had abandoned former
girlfriend Chris Ann Brennan after she gave birth to their daughter, Lisa,
whose paternity he initially denied.

In March 1991, while the FBI investigation was being carried out, he married
Laurene Powell, with whom he would go on to have three more children.

One of the most damning assessments of Jobs’ character came from an unnamed
woman: “She described his personal life as being lacking due to his
narcissism and shallowness.

At the same time, she praised his vision and foresight.

“She also stated that his success at Apple, which provided an enormous
amount of power for the Appointee also caused him at times to lose sight of
honesty and integrity and even caused him to distort the truth at times to
get his way.” The report does not make clear whether Mr Jobs applied
for the position on the President’s Export Council or had been headhunted
for the role.

It is also not known whether he was ever offered the post, or if the
unfavourable findings contained in the report disqualified him.

The dossier does show the enormous lengths to which the FBI went to in their
investigation, interviewing dozens of people and obtaining his records from
Homestead High School in California, where he received an average grade of
2.65 out of 4.

Investigators even asked Mr Jobs to prove he had been adopted after they
failed to locate his birth certificate.

Agents checked his criminal record, which was clean, obtained details of civil
law suits he had been involved in and asked for his links to foreign
countries.

Mr Jobs appears to have been frank about his past drug use with the FBI. An
account of his interview with the investigators said: “He had not used
any illegal drugs in the past five years however during the period of
approximately 1970 – 1974 he experimented with marijuana, hashish and LSD.
This was during high school and college.”
