Fire-starting devices have been discovered in the Blue Mountains, as firefighters begin battling a fresh blaze in the bushland area west of Sydney.

At least six of the eight fires in the rugged region are believed to have been lit deliberately, and one was started by lightning.

A three-day blaze at Leura that threatened up to six homes and has scorched 14 hectares so far was contained this morning.

Fire crews were called to a fresh blaze at Tablelands Road in Wentworth Falls about 11.30am (AEST), bringing the total number of fires in the area to eight.

“Initial examination of the crime scene show that we believe some of the fires have been lit using incendiary devices,” Detective Superintendent Greig Newbery told reporters at Katoomba.

“We want to really enforce that we treat bushfires very seriously here, and any persons that are found lighting these fires will face the full forces of the law.”

Mr Newbery said authorities were going through a list of suspected and known arsonists.

At this stage, NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said six of the fires had been deemed suspicious while lightning was responsible for another.

It was too early to say if an arsonist was behind the Wentworth blaze, he added.

It’s believed an arsonist started a fire at Leura Cascades yesterday while crews were working to contain a blaze a kilometre away at Olympian Parade.

Of the 68 fires burning in NSW, the Olympian Parade fire is the only blaze that hasn’t been contained.

Mr Rogers said that devices used to start fires had been discovered in burnt-out bushland, although he would not identify them or say where they had been found.

Earlier in the day, police reactivated Strike Force Tronto to target arson crime across the state.
