Asma al-Assad and those who have been sanctioned

Bushra al-Assad, Assad’s sister, was born in October 1960 and is Bashar
Assad’s only sister. Dubbed the “iron lady”, she is seen by some as the
power behind her brother.

A stubborn woman, she eloped with Asef Shawkat, a man who ruthlessly carved a
powerful military career for himself, and married him without approval from
her parents.

She possesses a degree in pharmacy and is reported to have played a strong
hand in the development of Syria’s pharmaceutical industry.

She is also widely believed to have been most like her father and former
Syrian president Hafez al-Assad; some experts maintain that were it not for
her gender she may well have been groomed for the presidency herself.

Assad’s mother, Anisa (née Makhlouf) al-Assad is known as
the “keeper of the seal” of Hafez al-Assad’s legacy and is thought to
restrain Bashar al-Assad’s desire to crack down on corruption within some
branches of his family.

Her own family, the Makhloufs, have their wealth estimated as high as $3
billion, controlling vast amounts of real estate, banking and Syriatel, the
nation’s mobile phone network.

Unlike Asma al-Assad, the president’s mother never played a very public role,
preferring to remain in the background rather than exposing herself to the
Syrian population.

The name of Assad’s sanctioned sister-in-law is unclear, although it is likely
to be Manal al-Assad, the wife of his brother Maher al-Assad, who commands
the Republican Guard.
