Assad urges dialogue between Syrians

“The real problem in Syria is that of combining politics with the work being done on the ground,” the Syrian president said.

“The political work continues, in particular by calling for dialogue between Syrians based on the aspirations of all Syrians.”

Assad made the remarks during a meeting with UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Damascus on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the UN-Arab League representative stated that the solution to the unrest in Syria “can only come from the Syrian people.”

Brahimi, the former UN envoy to Afghanistan and Iraq, replaced Kofi Annan, who stepped down as the UN-Arab League envoy for Syria at the end of August.

“The success of political action is dependent on putting pressure on the countries that finance and train the terrorists, and which bring weapons into Syria, until they stop doing so,” Assad stated.

He also said the Syrian government would “cooperate with all sincere efforts to solve the crisis, so long as the efforts are neutral and independent.”

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
