US PRESIDENT Barack Obama will deliver a private pep talk to the Federal Labor Cabinet during his two-day visit to Australia.

Mr Obama, who is said to be “champing at the bit” about his visit, will also hold brief talks with Opposition leader Tony Abbott.

His private meet-and-greet with Julia Gillard’s Cabinet, kept under wraps in the official program, has US political buffs in Labor ranks excited about the opportunity to meet him.

After those talks have concluded, he will proceed to address a joint sitting of Parliament House.

The Prime Minister and Mr Obama are expected to announce a new joint Australian-US military base in Darwin during the trip.

Ms Gillard yesterday rejected criticism by the Greens leader Bob Brown about the US alliance, joining Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd in warning the Greens would not direct foreign policy under her Government.

“We’ve been an ally of the United States for 60 years,” Ms Gillard said in Hawaii for APEC talks.

“On some of the statements made by the Greens, let me make it absolutely clear, national security policy is the provenance of Government. The Government will make the necessary decisions to keep our nation safe and secure,” Ms Gillard said.

Speaking from London, Mr Abbott said his instinct was there would be an announcement.

“I can’t imagine that it will just be a casual drop by Darwin,” he said.
