New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has cast doubt on surprise claims by NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly that police have the capability to take down a plane over the city if the need arose.
Mr Bloomberg said that the police have ‘lots of capabilities you don’t know about and you won’t know about’, but that ‘it certainly does not mean 9/11 wouldn’t have occurred’.
The mayor was responding after Mr Kelly said that the NYPD has weapons powerful enough to shoot down an aircraft out of the sky in an extreme situation.

Mr Kelly refused to give details of whether the NYPD has surface-to-air missiles or armed helicopters with the capability of bringing down a plane.
