Homicide detectives believe a body found in a torched car south-west of Geelong is that of Torquay businessman, Mark Scherini.

Emergency crews were called to deal with a car fire in the Wurdiboluc Reservoir’s car park off Cape Otway Road just before 7:00pm (AEST) last night.

They found the body inside Mr Scherini’s car.

Detective Inspector John Potter says police are waiting for the results of forensic tests.

“We believe the fire was deliberately lit,” he said.

“We have been searching the vicinity of the car park to locate anything that might help us with this investigation.

“At this stage we are waiting on the results of a post-mortem to establish the exact cause of death.”

Mr Scherini, 55, was last seen at work in Geelong yesterday morning.

Mr Potter says he did not turn up for a business meeting.

“There’s nothing at this early stage to indicate there’s any disputes or any obvious issues involving Mr Scherini or his work or his family.”

The suspicious death follows the discovery of a woman’s body wrapped in a blanket in Port Melbourne yesterday afternoon.

The body was found by two workers at a park off Lorimer Street.

Police have identified the woman in her 60s, who is from Southbank.

They will not publicly reveal how she died.

Mr Potter says police believe the woman was killed elsewhere.

“Investigators believe she was killed at a location and taken to that scene in Lorimer Street,” he said.

“She was wrapped in a blanket, suggesting that she had been transported from some other location.”

Police say they have not established any links between the deaths, or the death of a woman whose body was found in a laneway in Caulfield South on Monday.
