Jakarta bombing_Jan 14_2016A shootout between attackers and police ensued after two bomb blasts in the central district of the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Thursday.

A spokesman of the Jakarta Metro Jaya Police said that the total number of fatalities was seven, including four perpetrators while about ten had been injured. One police officer was seriously injured.

Among the victims are reportedly the Dutch citizen Johannes Antonius Maria, 21-year-old Indonesian citizen Chairil, police officer Budiyono, 49-year-old policeman Dody Maryadi, and 24-year-old Indonesian citizen Angun.

All have been evacuated to the emergency unit of the Gatot Subroto Hospital located in proximity to the site of the bombing incident.

Information about the identity of the perpetrators remains sketch for the time being. No names or affiliations to either domestic or foreign terrorist organizations were released.

An analysis of amateur footage of the two explosions (see image above) by an explosive expert who is consulting for nsnbc international noticed that he could not see any significant sign of blast waves from the two bombs.

He added that there seemed to be more smoke than anything else. “It looked very much like smoke bombs or crudely made, nitrate-based explosives” he said.

Deputy Police Chief, Commander General Budi Gunawan urged everybody who lives and works in Jakarta to remain calm but vigilant, and to inform one another as well as police about observations that arouse suspicion. Gunawan dismissed claims that there were additional attackers roaming the city.

While initial sensationalized reports that the Islamic State was behind the attacks could neither be confirmed or fully rejected, Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Rizal Ramli assessed the situation, saying that rising poverty could partly be the reason for the growth of radicalism in the Indonesian society. Ramli stressed that:

“Therefore, all of us, including the government, must work hard to eradicate poverty, so that the disparity in social welfare among our people can be drastically reduced”.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo a.k.a. Jokowi responded shortly after the blasts and the ensuing shootout, saying that he had ordered the National Police Chief and the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs minister to chase down and arrest the suspects. Jokowi utterly condemned the acts of violence and expressed his condolences over the casualties resulting from the two blasts.
