Bosnia grapples with rampant corruption

Several surveys indicate that state leaders, health care and public procurement are considered as the most corrupt segments of the Bosnian society.

“… One of the devastating facts for our country is existence of so-called bad forms of corruption that means corruption among public officials and high-level politics. This is devastating for a democratic society,” Damir Berilo, a Bosnian researcher told Press TV.

According to reports, Bosnia and Herzegovina loses more than 200 million euros every year because of the rampant corruption in the country.

This is while Sarajevo says it has taken major steps to fight corruption, including creating specific bodies dedicated to countering corruption and adopting anti-corruption strategies.

“…We believe that Bosnia and Herzegovina has a chance to fight corruption by implementing strategy and serious approach by politicians in this field, but so far we cannot see any progress,” Berilo added.

Experts say that every Bosnian citizen has a duty to report corruption and bribery even if it does not concern them in order to put an end to the plague in the European country.
