THE family of a five-year-old boy is devastated after the boy’s father accidentally ran over him with his truck.

Sen-Sgt Ross Burbidge from Melton police said the boy’s father had just dropped his son off at his mother’s house after picking him up from child care in St Albans, north-west Melbourne.

He said the boy’s father went inside for a short time and did not realise his son had followed him as he left.

”He came out not knowing the young boy had also come back outside and he drove off as you normally do …” he said.

”(He) didn’t realise that the boy was there and ran over him.

The father was driving away from the house when the rear left wheel of the truck hit the boy.

”He didn’t stop there then because he didn’t know anything had happened,” Sen-Sgt Burbidge said.

The boy’s 14-year-old brother came outside when he heard something and when he saw what had happened, called his mother.

Sen-Sgt Burbidge said the man returned to the house after he was called and told about the accident.

”Mum immediately got on the phone and at that stage the father was a street and a half away,” Sen-Sgt Burbidge said.

”He immediately came back home and discovered that he’d run over the boy. He had no idea. Terribly sad.”

Ambulance officers were called but could not save the boy. He died at the scene in Melton South at 5.50pm.

Sen Serg Burbidge said the family was devastated.

”They’re extremely upset, both of them. It’s devastating actually to think that something like that’s happened,” he said.

”We don’t want to see too many more of them, I can tell you.

”You’ve just got to take a lot of care when you’ve got young children about.

”He obviously just didn’t realise he was there, he thought he’d left him inside and the young boy had run out.”

Melton Highway patrol leading Sen-Constable Craig Kelso said a number of witnesses were receiving counselling.

“A number of relatives of the child are all very distraught,” he said.

He cautioned people to be careful on the roads.

“This is a reminder for people to be vigilant of children,” he said.

The boy was the 39th pedestrian to die on the state’s roads this year.

Senior police have been alarmed by the figure, which compares with 27 at the same time last year.

The death brought the state’s 2011 road toll to 200, three more than at the same time last year.

Witnesses to the accident have been asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppers.com.au
