A Brazilian conwoman pocketed £190,000 in benefits by claiming she had 12 children – despite only one of them having ever lived in the UK.
Fabiola Peixe Dantas, 49, was jailed for more than two years after an investigation by Brent Council found that she only had four children.
Harrow Crown Court heard how she received £191,871 in housing and council tax benefits over a 12-year period from 1999 until 2011.

Dantas claimed to be a single mother with 12 children, in reality splashing the cash on luxury holidays to Egypt, Paris and Amsterdam and a £40,000 Mercedes.
The court heard that Dantas, who was living in a four-bed home in Harlesden, north-west London, posed as single parent and said she was working as a cleaner to fiddle the benefits system, but was caught out on December 15 last year.
She conned the council over 12 years by sending in fake documents from employers and landlords, while making even more money by renting out rooms at her taxpayer-funded home.
The court heard Dantas was remanded in custody after being refused bail following her arrest in December when police and officers from the UK Border Agency raided her home.
The fraud was ‘so serious’, the court was told, that she was kept in jail until her trial last week, when she admitted 12 counts of fraud after previously denying them.

Judge Graham Arran told Dantas that she had a ‘streak of dishonesty’, adding: ‘The whole operation was fraudulent from the beginning and was deliberately pursued out of greed.’
He added: ‘You have four children, only one of whom has ever lived in this country and who returned to Brazil some time ago’.
Dantas was jailed for two years and three months and faces being stripped of her assets at a confiscation hearing later this year.
Councillor Ruth Moher of Brent Council said: ‘I congratulate Brent Council anti-fraud team on bringing Ms Dantas to justice.
‘She deliberately planned to defraud taxpayers of close on £200,000, depriving those in real need of support while living an extravagant lifestyle.
‘Brent Council will not stop in its pursuit of benefit thieves so those claiming fraudulently should beware.’

Do the council not check these things? Do they not need birth certificates/passports or some form of proof these children exist and are living with her !!

I’ve just sent an email to Brent Council to ask how this happened in the first place and why it was allowed to continue for 12 years, may I suggest you all do the same, as taxpayers we deserve answers
– wendy, cheshire, 31/5/2012 17:29 Do agree with you, but I am afraid to say you will get the common response back like when politicians are questioned about cases, ” We can not comment on individual cases ” but until more people start voicing outrage and the people in charge start getting sacked for there actions then nothing will happen.

I think i will have to visit her in prison,to get educated. Three complete hip replacements arthritus in my feet and back, 83 years old and a widower, can’t get any help because i can get out of bed in the morning, wash and shave and get back into bed at night, and don’t already get benifits. Worked all my life saved to get a decent pension. Which is being taxed to pay these sort of people.
We have to get a grip soon or there will be nothing grip on to.

I dont know what is worse, the fact she falsely claimed the money or the fact that the system allowed her to claim as a single parent for 12 children without checking they actually existed. Did not one person who processed her claims have any doubt that she really had 12 kids as a single mother and kept having them???

Do our councils actually do ANY checks, at all, on benefits claimants.
If not, I’m off down to our local Town Hall tomorrow to submit a claim for my 67 dependant children !!!!

Every council in the land should publish an annual list, broken down street by street, of who is claiming benefit and for how many people (no need for amounts paid) and invite neighbours to contact them anonymously if they believe the statistics to be wrong. She would have been found out 11 years ago and the ludicrous amount of money thrown at her would have been saved.

i take it that these claims are never checked ..if i claim for 12 children will i get paid out??.
