Britain slams EU aid to Turkey

The Commons international development select committee released a report examining Britain’s contribution to EU development assistance on Friday 27 April which called into question the distribution of Britain’s aid money through the EU.

“Turkey has consistently been in the top five recipients of European Commission aid ($294 million in 2010). British taxpayers want the aid they give to go to the places where it can make the most difference,” said Malcolm Bruce, chairman of the committee.

The UK’s Department for International Development gives about £1.23bn of the British taxpayers’ money to the EU for aid annually. EU aid for Turkey this year stands at £703 million.

“Giving aid to relatively rich countries like Turkey could devalue the concept of aid,” added Bruce.

Moreover, the British lawmakers’ report revealed that less than 50% of the overall EU aid, including money from the European Commission budget and the European Development Fund, went to “low income” nations.

British MPs have urged the UK government to call for the modification of the definition of official development assistance (ODA), through which the EU aid is spent. However, MPs said International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell believed such a process “would take forever and be difficult”.
