Bushfire threatens Perth Airport area

A bushfire is burning out of control near Perth Airport, threatening lives and homes.

A watch and act alert has been issued for people in the eastern part of Cloverdale and northern part of Kewdale near the Perth Airport.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) says there is a possible threat to lives and homes because weather conditions are changing.

Residents have been warned to leave or get ready to actively defend their homes because the blaze is out of control and unpredictable.

FESA says the bushfire is moving fast in a southerly direction towards Tonkin Highway.

Embers are likely to be blown around homes and spot fires are starting up to 30m ahead of the fire, FESA says.

The fire was reported at 12.23pm (WST) on Wednesday and has so far burnt 20 hectares.

Fifty Fire and Rescue Service and volunteer Bush Fire Service firefighters in 17 appliances are at the scene.

They are being assisted by airport firefighters, federal police and two water-bombing helicopters.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

A Perth Airport spokesman said that while no flights had been affected, passengers could experience delays getting to and from the airport due to road closures.

Meanwhile, a bushfire that was sparked by lightning in swampland near Jandabup Lake in the City of Wanneroo has now been contained and is under control.
