Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls says the Queensland Government should release the details behind its decision not to lower dam levels.

The floods inquiry recommended water levels in Wivenhoe and North Pine dams, north of Brisbane, be reduced if there are predictions of another bad wet season.

Wivenhoe dam is currently at 81 per cent and North Pine dam at 98 per cent.

The weather bureau anticipates an above-average wet season, with four or five cyclones forming off the north Queensland coast.

The State Government today announced the dams will not be lowered, but Mr Nicholls says it should release the details behind the decision.

“If this decision is being made and there is such interest in it that the Government should be saying to the people of Queensland, here’s the information we’ve had,” Mr Nicholls said.

“In terms of the information that we have available and what we’ve been able to see that the Government has reacted to the Commission of Inquiry, has fixed up the faults from last time.

“I would say though that if this decision is being made and there is such interest in it that the Government should be saying to the people of Queensland, ‘here’s the information we’ve had’.”

Weather prediction

Bureau of Meteorology Queensland regional director, Jim Davidson, says at least one cyclone is expected to make landfall.

He says the monsoon could form in the far north as early as December.

“During La Nina and even during weak La Nina events, we do see that burst in the monsoon a little bit earlier and it can come before Christmas,” he said.

“We saw Althea on Christmas Eve of course 40 or so years ago impact on Townsville, so it’s not out of the question we will see cyclones before Christmas.

“But it’s not very often we actually have a landfall before Christmas.”

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk says he hopes the State Government will change its mind if required.

“That can change and there needs to be flexibility to lower the dam levels if the predictions change,” he said.
