With less than two weeks to go until the Olympic Games in London, Cameron told a group of young Tory activists at Downing Street that he wanted England’s sporting teams to have their own national anthem which would distinguish them from sports teams of Scotland and Wales.
Liberal Democrat MP Greg Mulholland has submitted a parliamentary motion arguing a campaign for the country to have its own anthem at sporting events should be won before the 2014 football World Cup in Brazil, reported the Independent.
Meanwhile, Scottish National Party MP Pete Wishart maintained that the English people have the right to their own national anthem but criticized Cameron saying such a proposal should be made by the people not him as the Prime Minister of the UK.
“It is about time England had its own sporting national anthem but it should emerge from the people rather than the Prime Minister”, said Wishart.
The call for a national anthem for England’s sporting teams comes as a recent poll conducted by the state-run BBC showed that the majority of the British people believe the London Olympic Games will mostly benefit England not Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
