Candelo father, son help in Moruya rescue

A father and son from Candelo on the New South Wales far south coast have been involved in the rescue of a Wollongong family at the mouth of Moruya River.

The family comprising a man and his daughter, 8, and son, 10, were kayaking when they were swept out to sea where large waves capsized their craft.

A rescue helicopter found the girl and her father, 40, clinging to one of the kayaks.

Rob Townsend and his son say they paddled their boards to the distressed family when it became apparent they were in distress.

“I grabbed the boy and I didn’t have time to think and I said you will have to let go mate because you can’t stay there anymore because he was just sort of hanging on,” Mr Townsend said.

“The boy was really shivering.

“I took the boy and started paddling in with him but I wasn’t getting anywhere and then my son came out and I gave him my board because my board’s a bit bigger and he managed to put the boy on the front and a boat came and got us.”

Andrew Edmunds from far South Coast Surf Lifesaving says the conditions were treacherous.

“They were battling a fierce outgoing tide,” he said.

“There are king tides at the moment.

“It was quite a large tide and it was heading out to sea at an exceptional rate.

“They were actually more than 200m to 300m out to sea by the time they were overthrown.”
