Cannabinoid Facts: THC, CBD, CBN, CBC, THCV, CBG and Other Unique Phyto Cannabinoids

Phytocannabinoids, also known as cannabinoids orexocannabinoids, are differentiated from endo-cannabinoids due to their production from enzymes  in a plant opposed to being manufactured  in a human, or better yet, a mammalCannabinoidscome in many shapes and functions. Today, there are many known unique phytocannnabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids. Laboratories, like Montana Biotech, are currently assisting in cannabinoid testing. This service can help patients get the most from this ancient plant, cannabis.

Some of the >66 known Phytocannabinoids:

CBG (Cannabigerol): Non-psychoactive, sleep inducing. Anti-microbial. Lowers intra-ocular pressure (IOP) Glaucoma.Trends in Pharmacological SciencesVolume 30, Issue 10, October 2009, Pages 515-527

CBC (Cannabichromene): Sedative effect.Moderates effects of THCAnalgesic (pain relieving). Non-psychoactive. Trends in Pharmacological Sciences
Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2009, Pages 515-527

THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin): Stronger, faster “high” effect.Apatite suppressantEuphoriaanalgesic (pain relieving).

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol): Psychotropic. Analgesic (pain relieving). Apatite stimulant. Bronchial dilator. Lowers IOP/glaucoma.

CBD (Cannabidiol): Non-psychoactive. Reduces muscle spasms. Muscle relaxant. Analgesic (pain relieving) Trends in Pharmacological Sciences

CBN (Cannabinol): Mildly psychoactive. Non-narcotic analgesic (pain relieving). Good indication of medications age. Trends in Pharmacological Sciences

Exploring the Endocannabinoid System Cannabinoids and their Therapeutic Potentials

Montana Biotech is a lab focusing on RE-discovering the science behind cannabisCannabinoids are the therapeutic compounds found in the cannabis genus. Both hemp and marijuana producephyto-cannabinoids. The true difference between cannabis hemp andcannabis marijuana is the plants ability to produce, enzymaticaly,THCA. New discoveries have lead researchers to the hypothesis that it is the functionality of the enzyme, THCA synthase, not the absence of the gene coding for the enzyme that differentiates marijuana varieties from cannabis hemp varieties. Plant derived cannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, are created by the cannabis plant through a single enzyme catalyzed reaction. Each cannabinoid has a corresponding enzyme catalyzing their creation. CBN is the only knowncannabinoid NOT derived from an enzymatic process; instead CBN is a degradation product, UV light exposure, heating, of THC.

Endocannabinoid System Network

Endocannabinoid System Explained,  Dr. Melamede Ph.D professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Wikipedia

The endocannabinoid system refers to a group of neuromodulatorylipids and their receptors that are involved in a variety of physiological processes including appetitepain-sensationmood, and memory; it mediates the psychoactive effects of cannabis and, broadly speaking, includes:

The endocannabinoid system has been studied using genetic and pharmacological methods. These studies have revealed a broad role for endocannabinoid signaling in a variety of physiological processes, including neuromodulator release,[2][3][4] motor learning,[5] synaptic plasticity,[6] appetite,[7] and pain sensation.[8]

Cannabis potency testing has come of age! Knowing the cannabinoidprofile of a cannabis strain or variety will help providers of medicalcannabis fit a patients’ condition to a medicine they will benefit from the best. Montana Biotech offers cannabinoid potency testing inMontana. There are two types of testing that can be employed by alaboratory or individual to analyze their cannabisqualitative andquantitative.

Qualitative testing ofcannabinoids:

When thinking of the difference betweenqualitative vs quantitativetesting methods think ofquality verses quantity. Thin layer chromatography, T.L.C., is a qualitativemethod of testing cannabisthat provides a “picture” or “finger print” of the qualityof phytocannabinoids present in a medical marijuana sample. It is an absent or present testing method; is CBD in the sample or not? T.L.C.is not a method to determine the amount of CBD in a cannabis sample as accurately as a quantitative testing method like gas chromatography, GC.

Quantitative testing ofcannabinoids:

When thinking of the difference betweenquantitative vs qualitativetesting methods think ofquantity verses quality.Quantitative methods determine how much THC,CBDCBN or other novelcannabinoids are present in a medical cannabissample or cannabis infused preparation. Some of the well knownquantitative methods are gas chromatography (GC), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Both methods are currently used by cannabis potency testing labs all over the U.S.

Grow Buddy™, Test for THC, CBD, CBN at Home

Grow Buddy™ is a T.L.C. based method for analyzing cannabis for the presence of THCCBDCBN that ANYONE can perform at home! The Test is quick and fun! if you have brewed beer, wine, if you consider your self a “good” cook, you can perform a T.L.C. test for THCCBD,CBN.

The control in this test was ~17% THC by volume… You can tell the size of the dots for Connie Chung (A) and (B) are larger. You can draw you own conclusions!

Abstract
The use of Cannabis is illicit in numerous countries and the increasing consumption has led to a multiplication of scientific studies. New methods of planar chromatography such as Automated Multiple Development (AMD) and Optimum Performance Laminar Chromatography (OPLC) techniques can be used as a substitute for the traditional TLC for the identification and quantification of theIndian hemp components. Each method offers its own advantage: high resolution with neither diffusion nor spot stretching for AMD, speed, efficiency and the possibility of working in semi-preparative mode for OPLC.
