Cannon blasts mark UK Queen’s birthday

Queen Elizabeth II spent the day celebrating privately with the royal family at Windsor Castle as she prepares for the grander celebrations on 16 June marking her ‘official’ birthday at Buckingham Palace.

This year, the Queen also celebrates her Diamond Jubilee to mark her 60th year on the throne. Events marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee range from champagne dinners to a 1000-strong flotilla of water craft sailing down the river Thames.

As the Royal Navy fired gun salutes to mark the Queen’s actual birthday, soldiers in York were inspected before the display.

The largest salute was at the Tower of London, with the Royal Gibraltar Regiment firing a 62-gun salute. Queen Elizabeth II is Britain’s oldest reigning monarch and is the second-longest reigning British monarch after Queen Victoria who reigned for 63 years.
