Care crisis kills 24k diabetics yearly

The government’s spending watchdog, the National Audit Office (NAO), said in a report that health regulations require the NHS centers to carry out nine different regular checks on diabetics, but barely half of the 3.1 million such patients receive the care.

The NAO found in an inquiry that in 2009-2010 “only half of the increasing number of people with diabetes received all the recommended care processes.”

The watchdog said such a huge failure leads to the deaths of 24,000 diabetics each year that could be easily prevented.

The NAO also revealed that the NHS performance is such that 69 percent of patients only get one of the nine required conditions checked while another 15 percent are not tested at all.

“It is shocking that 24,000 people with diabetes are dying unnecessarily each year. The department has spent 11 years on this, but is still failing to deliver the standards of care it promised,” chair of the Commons public accounts committee Margaret Hodge said.
