‘Iran, Ecuador to stand up to hegemons’

President Ahmadinejad on Wednesday said the hegemonic powers have been piling up pressure on Iran and Ecuador as they are upset by the growing ties between the two countries.

He made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Iran’s chief executive praised Ecuador’s revolutionary stance against global hegemony and said the enemies’ attempts to exert additional pressure on the Latin American country will backfire.

He also highlighted bilateral ties with Ecuador as excellent and progressive and urged both sides to work toward further expansion of ties in all areas.

President Ahmadinejad also pointed to the cultural commonalities and affinity between Iran and Ecuador, and said the implementation of agreements between the two countries would be a step toward the promotion of all-out relations.

Ecuador’s foreign minister, for his part, lauded the relations with Iran as friendly and said Tehran and Quito can overcome the adversaries’ propaganda campaigns by strengthening their cooperation.

The Ecuadorian top diplomat also held talks with Iran’s Minister of Energy Majid Namjou on the same day.

After the meeting, he told reporters that both sides discussed various issues, including Ecuador’s allocation of over $400 million to purchasing oil derivatives from Iran, and the construction of a hydro power plant in Ecuador.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Ecuadorian minister is currently on an official visit to Iran.

He also held talks with Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi to discuss bilateral ties and attended a joint press conference with him on Wednesday.
