Carla Bruni-Sarkozy lashes out at Paris Match over pictures of her daughter

This is the second Sarkozy child to receive unwanted media attention in a
week. On Sunday, the President personally apologised to a police woman
standing outside the preisdential residence after his youngest son Louis
threw a tomato, a marble and other objects at her.

It is also the second week in a row that Paris Match has angered a
presidential candidate’s partner. Last week, Valérie Trierweiler, the
girlfriend of French Socialist frontrunner Francois Hollande expressed fury
at finding herself splashed on the front page of the magazine for whom she
works.

“What a shock to find yourself on the front page of your own paper. I am
angry to see the use of photos without my agreement and without letting me
know,” Miss Trierweiler posted to the micro-blogging site Twitter.

The magazine replied: “It’s true, Valerie. We didn’t discuss the front
page with you. That’s Match’s independence. You are best placed to
understand that.” The Bruni-Sarkozys raised French eyebrows by putting
their private life on public display in their whirlwind three-month romance
leading to marriage in 2008. The president’s core conservative electorate
was particularly shocked by a photo of Mr Sarkozy in Ray Bans carrying
Aurélien, 10, Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy’s son from a previous relationship, on his
shoulders as the boy held his hands over his eyes.

Mrs Bruni later said she regretted the photos and swore to better protect her
children. According to Le Parisien newspaper, she shields her daughter from
media attention by taking her on walks in the gardens of the Elysée Palace
and only takes her outside the gates after a team of bodyguards has ensured
the coast is clear.

However, this week her security staff told her they she had been trailed by
the press pack. “Her blood ran cold,” a friend told Le Parisien. “After
placing the baby in the car she went off to meet (the photographers) and a
row ensued.” “A few hours later, the photographer (she had spoken
to) dropped off a memory card of photos, but warned Carla that three other
photographers had been with him.” Credited with toning down Mr
Sarkozy’s bling tendencies, Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy has nevertheless been happy to
discuss her private life to help her husband recast himself as a “man
of the people” and not the “President of the Rich” as he
seeks a second term in elections in April and May.

Last week, the multi-millionaire heiress sparked mirth among commentators and
opponents by insisting “we are modest, simple folk” while in other
interviews she waxed lyrical about her love of sitting on the sofa in
tracksuit watching soap operas and the French equivalent of Pop Idol.

Mr Sarkzy, meanwhile, dragged his personal life back to the fore last week by
blaming his error of judgment on spending his 2007 election victory night at
the glitzy Champs-Elysées restaurant, Le Fouquets, and a subsequent jaunt on
a billionaire businessman’s yacht on the breakdown of his second marriage to
Cécilia Sarkozy. The faux pas, he said was all down to trying to save his
marriage from “exploding”.

However, he added: “This time I’ve got a solid family.”
