Carr’s close friend appointed to Vatican

The federal government has appointed one of Foreign Minister Bob Carr’s oldest friends to represent Australia at the Vatican.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Senator Carr on Sunday confirmed weeks of speculation that long-term NSW Labor lawyer John McCarthy, QC, will be Australia’s next ambassador to the Holy See.

Mr McCarthy is expected to take up the position in September, replacing former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer, who left the job in January.

Senator Carr’s friendship with Mr McCarthy extends back to their student days.

Announcing the appointment, Ms Gillard and Senator Carr said Mr McCarthy had been actively involved in public and church affairs for decades.

Born in the NSW town of Parkes in 1947, Mr McCarthy is a devout Catholic with a son in the priesthood.

He was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great by the Holy See in 2006, for services to the Catholic Church in Australia and the wider community.

He has twice failed to win ALP preselection but has been a party lawyer for decades.

He was also represented the Dunghutti people, appearing as senior counsel in their successful native title case in the Federal Court in 1997.

He is also a former president of the St Thomas More Society lawyer’s fellowship.

He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the University of Sydney earlier this year.

Mr Fischer was Australia’s first dedicated ambassador to the Holy See. The job was traditionally coupled with ambassadorships to other European countries.

Ms Gillard and Senator Carr said the bilateral relationship had benefited from the dedicated role.

“This has allowed closer dialogue, advocacy and cooperation with the Vatican on a broad range of issues of importance to Australia,” they said in a statement.

Senator Carr also announced two other diplomatic appointments on Sunday.

Career diplomat George Fraser will be Australia’s next High Commissioner to Kiribati. He is expected to take up the role in June.

And career diplomat Karen Lanyon has been appointed Consul-General in Los Angeles. She will take up the role in July.
