An unconventional project by US university students has concluded that China’s nuclear arsenal could be many times larger than current estimates, drawing the attention of Pentagon analysts.
The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Georgetown University students under the instruction of a former Pentagon official have assembled the largest body of public knowledge yet about a vast network of secret tunnels dug by China’s secretive Second Artillery Corps, responsible for nuclear warheads.
The 363-page study has not yet been published, but has already sparked a congressional hearing and been circulated among top US defence officials, including the Air Force vice chief of staff, the Post reported.
“It’s not quite a bombshell, but those thoughts and estimates are being checked against what people think they know based on classified information,” it quoted an unnamed Defense Department strategist as saying.

So, maybe the urban folklore of DUMB (Deep Underground Military Bases) isn’t just urban folklore?
Everyone got into the act.
It is a cool idea. Like a Jules Vern project. It’s too bad that the average citizen can’t enjoy the
use of it since the average schmuck paid for at least part of it.
I’ve seen tunnel boring machines in Moscow. The one that I saw was named “Katusha”.
The Moscow Metro system is like a living entity. It just keeps growing and growing.
It is just fantastic to use and enjoy.
So, no doubt that every major country is burrowing under ground.
Just another form of detante.
They all figure when the real poisons are sprayed and the big bombs start falling that they will have some safe place to hide.
No doubt that there are many strategies to find the other guys tunnels and either flood them and drown everyone like rats or blow them up.
More time and money pissed away trying to hurt someone.
If leaders could just behave like the civilized humans that they think that are then they could use that time and money to make the world a better place and not one big Rube Goldberg death trap and rigged gambling machine.
Anyway, expect every nation that has any substantial money and or gold to have some deep tunnel system.
